The first episode of A Bona Fide Killer introduces Bona, a devoted wife and mother who hides a shocking secret—she is a trained assassin who takes out targets with a sniper rifle while balancing school runs, cooking duties, and family life. Episode 1 lays the foundation for a gripping story of hidden identities, family love, and dangerous secrets, all set against the backdrop of a seemingly ordinary Korean household.

Here is a full breakdown of everything that happens in the opening episode of this thrilling new Korean drama.

The Christmas Day Opening That Sets the Tone

The episode opens on Christmas Day in 2011. A young girl watches happy families gathered around, and the sight of a Christmas tree brings her to tears. A mysterious person approaches her, but the face is deliberately hidden from viewers.

In the next scene, the girl is at home with her father, who has just been released from prison. He tells her he hasn’t seen her in seven years and says how much he missed her. He apologizes for leaving her alone in the past and for the hurtful things he said, admitting he blames himself.

But this reunion is not what it seems. As the man prepares to drink tea, the girl stops him, claiming something might be wrong with it. She makes a fresh cup—but we learn she has actually poisoned it. The father’s true colors emerge when he coldly tells her she reminds him of her late mother. He blames her for reporting him to the police, which sent him to prison, and admits he regrets not killing her too.

He attacks her, choking her—but from a nearby building, our heroine Bona takes aim with a sniper rifle and kills him instantly. The girl spots Bona and rushes to the rooftop, only to find no one there. Instead, Bona has left behind a message: “Merry Christmas.”

This moment triggers a memory. The girl recalls that when she was crying near the Christmas tree, Bona was the stranger who approached her. Bona had told her she could grant her wish—but only if she stopped crying, stayed in the living room, and kept the lights on. Bona promised they would meet again. Overwhelmed by these memories, the girl breaks down in tears.

Bona’s Ordinary Family Life

The story jumps to the present, where we meet Bona’s family. Her husband, Tae-sung, is a warm-hearted reporter, and their adorable daughter, Yul, wakes them up in the morning. The household feels loving and completely normal.

Bona starts preparing breakfast while Tae-sung asks which outfit he should wear to a club he’s investigating. As the family gets ready, Tae-sung reminds Bona about an important upcoming day—her return to work after three years of parental leave ends the next day. Bona warns him to come home on time, and he promises he won’t forget.

Tae-sung, a dedicated journalist, heads off to work on a story. Bona takes Yul to school, gently reminding the teacher to take good care of her daughter.

Small Signs of Bona’s Hidden Skills

Throughout the episode, subtle hints reveal that Bona is no ordinary housewife. At a café with other mothers, she catches a falling pot just before it lands on a child—reacting with lightning-fast reflexes. Later, at a mart, she notices the boss mistreating an employee and quietly teaches him a lesson using her own methods.

Even a simple task like chopping cabbage reveals her precision—she slices every piece with identical, professional accuracy that stuns her mother-in-law.

Tae-sung’s Dangerous Investigation

While Bona manages her double life, Tae-sung is deep into a risky story about drug supply routes running through clubs. Using a hidden camera watch, he tries to identify a gang boss. He follows a suspect’s car in a taxi, but the vehicle is spotted, leading to an accident. A mysterious man watching from a hillside had orchestrated the whole thing.

At the police station, Tae-sung tries to learn whether the incident was a murder or suicide, cleverly getting an officer to accidentally confirm a name—Duke. He explains his personal situation, mentioning his four-year-old daughter and his wife returning to work, but the officer refuses to reveal more until the forensic report arrives.

Bona’s First On-Screen Mission

At work, Bona joins a covert team disguised as an electronics company called Darum Electronics. Her colleagues include Yeong-do, a skilled hacker who recently got promoted, along with other specialists like a medical expert. Their team leader, Bong-pal, welcomes her back, calling her the “ace” of the team.

Bong-pal assigns her a new client and a “meeting.” Bona agrees but insists she must work during the day so she can pick up her daughter from school. The “meeting” turns out to be an assassination—Bona climbs a building, sets up her sniper, and eliminates a target while Yeong-do blocks the security cameras from his car.

A Marriage Built on Secrets

The episode explores the couple’s tender relationship. Even when Tae-sung comes home late, Bona can’t stay angry at him. Through flashbacks, we learn how they met—Tae-sung once saved Bona when she was attempting suicide. He told her that even without knowing her name or job, he could tell she was a good person, and he confessed he had already fallen in love with her.

Bona also visits Yun-nam-ok, a flower shop owner who knows the truth about her double life. When asked what would happen if Tae-sung ever discovered her secret, Bona insists that day will never come.

The Chilling Final Moments

The episode ends with a powerful visual contrast. Tae-sung, at his media company, watches a news report about a man killed by a sniper—unaware that his own wife is the shooter. He gazes lovingly at their family photo.

Meanwhile, Bona receives two photographs: one showing her happy family, and another capturing her holding a sniper rifle after a kill. These two images perfectly capture the impossible balance she maintains between love and death.

Why This Episode Matters

Episode 1 of A Bona Fide Killer succeeds by blending domestic warmth with deadly tension. The concept of a loving mother who secretly works as an assassin creates constant suspense, while Tae-sung’s parallel investigation hints at the collision course ahead. The strong emotional foundation makes viewers care about the family, raising the stakes for whatever comes next.

With its unique premise, layered characters, and cliffhanger ending, the premiere sets up a thrilling ride for fans of action-packed Korean dramas.
